Racialized Gang Violence Prevention Initiative
Towards a Model of Racialized Gang Violence
Prevention: Case study -- Pasadena
The Network Against Hate Crime's guarterly meeting featured a panel discussion, "Towards a Model of Racialized Gang
Violence Prevention: Case study -- Pasadena." The panel, moderated by LACCHR Executive Director Robin Toma, took
place on November 15 at the West Hollywood Sheriff's Station. For the past two years, Pasadena has witnessed more
than 70 crimes (usually physical attacks and robberies) targetting Latino immigrant men by members of two African
American gangs. This phenomenon is notable because it is a departure from countywide trends. The great majority
of anti-black hate crimes are committed by Latinos and vice versa. However, although most of the anti-black crimes
are committed by Latino gang members, only a small minority of anti-Latino crimes appear to be commited by black gang members.
